Phillip Flindell II (Circa 1798 – 18xx)

Phillip Flindell was born about 1798, probably in Doncaster, Yorkshire, the fourth child and third son of Thomas Flindell and Mary Brunton.  His father was working for the Doncaster Gazette from 1790, but moved the family to Helston, Cornwall in 1798, where on April 15th 1798.  Phillip’s older siblings John Brunton, Mary and Thomas were baptised in Truro in April 1798, so it is likely Phillip was born after that date.  Phillip is the only child of Thomas and Mary for which a baptism record cannot be found.  In 1800 the family again moved, this time to Falmouth where his father continued his printing business and it is in the Falmouth region that Phillip remained.

It is likely that Phillip was named after his father’s brother, a shipwright from Flushing near Falmouth who married Mary Plomer.  As explained below there is a strong Flushing connection.  Phillip’s occupation was recorded as Mariner.  While small ships and fishing boats plied out of Falmouth and Flushing it is likely that the presence of his uncle in that region that led to him meeting his future bride.  Certainly the Flindell family would have been well known.

Phillip married Nancy Spurrier on November 10th 1827, either at Mylor or Flushing.[1] No record of baptism or burial has been found for children of Nancy and Phillip, therefore it may be assumed there was issue from this marriage.

Elizabeth parents were Joseph Spurrier and Elizabeth Stephens who were married in the Parish/District of Mylor on 15 Aug 1796[2].  Joseph was buried December 8th 1830 in the Parish/District of Mylor.  He was 67 giving a year of birth of about 1763[3].  Elizabeth was buried in the Parish/District of Mylor on January 28th 1847[4].  She was 80 giving her a year of birth of about 1766.  Both were residence of Flushing.

It is not known when Phillip and Nancy died or where they may be buried, although it may be assumed that it was in the Mylor area.
